Day 07: A Swedish Good-bye

The perfect way to end a fabulous road-trip? A delicious breakfast and a dip in the sea!
Throughout the trip, we'd learned that hotel breakfasts in Sweden are reason alone to get up in the morning. In a final send-off from Hotel Mäster Johan in Malmö's old town, we had a choice of "3-minute" or "6-minute" eggs; several different kinds of fresh bread and crispbread and pastries; several different kinds of meat and sausages and cheese; yoghurt and fruit; a selection of teas and coffee with a pitcher of warm milk. There were at least five kinds of juice. They'd even put together a hot breakfast station for homesick foreigners with bacon, scrambled eggs, and baked beans for English guests.

With our final meal tucked away, we decided on one final send-off of our own. I'd been told that no visit to Sweden is complete without a dip in the sea. So, at the historic Ribersborgs Kallbadhus, we took ourselves to their piping hot sauna, with its beautiful views over the waters of the Öresund strait. Although, word to the wise, it's an adventure for the brave, as you must leave your clothes behind! When I couldn't stand the heat another moment, I did as the locals do and plunged headfirst into the sea. It was a perfect way to end a fabulous road-trip.

Then we entered the location of the drop-off site that we'd been given at Volvo Headquarters into my new car's trusty GPS and away we went, over the Öresund Bridge to Denmark. Although it was hard to say good-bye to such a beautiful country, at least we were taking a piece of it home with us thanks to Volvo – which even takes care of the shipping!

Leaving Sweden was hard, but thank goodness that I had a pleasant flight ahead of me on Scandinavia SAS: What other airline offers you "Economy Extra," where for a few bucks more you get a big plush blanket and a little more legroom?
